Six runners. Heavy ground. Nineteen fences. And a pace map that looks straightforward.
Timeform call it uncontested, and that centres the whole race around Solar System.
The Shape of the Race
There’s no obvious habitual front-runner to go with him. If Solar System is allowed to stride on, he controls the fractions. Over 3m1f in testing ground, that’s a significant tactical edge. Saving energy early is everything at Southwell when it turns attritional from the third-last.
The question isn’t whether he gets the lead. It’s whether he can convert it efficiently.
At Ascot last time he was reported to have jumped and hung left. On a left-handed track that isn’t automatically helpful — drifting in the air and on landing can still cost ground and break rhythm. If he’s neat and economical here, he’ll take some pegging back. If he’s not, the door opens.
The Solid Option – Smurfette
Smurfette brings the most dependable profile for this exact test.
Course-and-distance winner.
Proven stayer at 3m.
Comfortable in soft and heavy conditions.
Consistent in Class 4 and below.
Her third at Market Rasen last time came after a bad mistake two out, which flattened her chance. Prior to that she’d been second at Uttoxeter in a race run at a proper tempo, travelling strongly and sticking on.
She doesn’t need to improve to win this. She just needs a clear round. If the leader wastes energy or makes errors, she’s the one most likely to capitalise late.
The Wildcards
Kayce Dutton won over 3m at Market Rasen in January and is capable on figures, but his subsequent pulled-up effort tempers enthusiasm. In a steadily run race, hold-up types can find themselves with too much to do turning in.
Lilting Verse stays well and handles cut, but her recent efforts lack punch. She’s more of a place player unless the race collapses in front.
Storminhome tries first-time headgear for Dan Skelton, which is an interesting angle statistically, but his recent chase form reads weak. He needs a revival rather than just a tweak.
Jasmin De Cotte has bits of form that give him an outside squeak, yet his recent runs suggest he needs more than just the right conditions.
What Wins This?
In small-field staying handicaps on heavy ground, it usually comes down to three things:
Energy conservation
Clean jumping
Stamina in the final half-mile
If Solar System gets an easy time and jumps cleanly, he can dictate and grind them down.
If there’s any inefficiency — drifting, clouting, racing too freely — then Smurfette’s proven stamina and course form make her the percentage call.
Verdict
Smurfette is the most solid answer in the race.
Solar System is the tactical danger and could simply boss it from the front.
Kayce Dutton is the one to consider if the pace lifts unexpectedly.
Small field. Clear shape. It’s about execution rather than hidden angles.
