Seven runners, Polytrack, and the key line in the setup is simple: pace forecast very weak. In these small-field Kempton 7f handicaps, that usually means one thing — position beats potential. If they dawdle early, the horse already in the first three turning in often gets first run and the late closers are left praying for gaps and a collapse that never comes.
How the race is likely to be run
With no obvious tearaway, this looks a tactical crawl rather than a true-run 7f. That swings the advantage firmly towards the runners who can sit handy without pulling, then quicken off the home bend. It also puts pressure on anything that can start slowly or routinely gets detached: you simply don’t get time to recover.
The shortlist
Mission Command (IRE) is the one who makes most sense in the context of the race shape. He’s a 4yo with a bit of scope, and crucially he’s the type who can be ridden prominently in a slowly-run affair. His recent form reads like a horse who’s been competitive without getting an ideal scenario; this is the kind of race where he can travel in the right position and strike first.
Bold Suitor is the solid alternative. He’s a reliable AW operator at 7f, and in a small field he tends to hold his pitch and keep finding. The only caveat is the 151-day break — not a deal-breaker, but you don’t want to be giving match practice away in a race that could turn into a 2f sprint.
How Impressive (IRE) is an obvious player on historical numbers and has plenty of 7f AW form, but he comes with baggage: repeated notes about being taken down early, and a recent pull-up (tongue issue). Last time he travelled and then weakened late. If he ends up doing the donkey work up front, he could set it up for something sitting on his quarters.
The ones with questions
Tadreeb (IRE) has the ability to run well, but he’s prone to giving away ground early. In a slowly-run 7f, that’s a habit you pay for unless the leaders gift you a meltdown.
Zero Carbon (FR) has old Kempton form that would put him right in the argument, but recent starts have been messy (slowly away/awkward). In a tactical seven-runner, that’s a serious negative — you can’t afford to spot the field a couple of lengths and expect them to come back to you.
Iconic Times is interesting as a lightly-raced AW type who could still have a workable mark, but this looks a streetwise, pace-and-position contest more than a “new angle” race.
Verdict
This has the look of a race where the winner is the one best placed when they press the button, not necessarily the one with the flashiest peak figure.
Selection: MISSION COMMAND (IRE)
He fits the race shape, should be ridden prominently, and in a slowly-run Kempton 7f that’s usually the winning ticket.
Main danger: BOLD SUITOR (if straight enough after the break)
Respect: HOW IMPRESSIVE (IRE) (if he behaves and gets things his own way)
Final word: don’t overcomplicate it — in a small-field crawl at Kempton, back the horse most likely to be in the right place at the right time.
