A tight little mile handicap to kick off the evening, and on paper it doesn’t look like one that will be run at a breakneck gallop. Timeform’s projection of a fairly even tempo makes sense, and at Wolverhampton that usually means one thing: track position counts.
With no obvious tearaway and Oman now out, this could turn into a race where the winner is the one who sits handy and quickens rather than the one trying to circle the field late.
The one with momentum – FRANCESI (IRE)
Francesi comes here in proper all-weather form. He’s been knocking on the door all winter and finally converted at Newcastle in a higher grade last time. Before that he’d gone close twice over a mile, shaping like a horse who just needed the run to fall right.
The key tonight is the 7lb claim. In a 0–75, that effectively drops him into a much softer spot than the bare mark suggests. Drawn in stall 3, he shouldn’t have to do much work to secure a position just off the speed, and if he travels like he has been, he’s the one most likely to pick up when it matters.
He doesn’t boast a winning record at this track, but he’s repeatedly run well here. In a race lacking depth, consistency becomes a weapon.
The course operator – SERIOUS LOOK (IRE)
Serious Look is the solid alternative. He knows Wolverhampton well and has a habit of running his race on this surface. His recent second over further here reads well, particularly the way he finished.
The question is tactical. If they dawdle and sprint, he’ll need the gaps to appear at the right time. If they go an honest tempo, he’s a definite threat late.
The unexposed angle – CRIMINAL SHORE (IRE)
Criminal Shore hasn’t had many goes on the all-weather and still has the look of a horse who could be slightly better than this mark. Draw 2 is helpful, and if ridden positively he could get first run.
The slight worry is whether he finds enough off the bridle in a tactical finish. He’s been competitive in stronger races but hasn’t been finishing like a certainty in waiting.
The pace wildcard – TERRIES ROYALE
Terries Royale may be the one who benefits most if this turns into a prominent-racer’s contest. He’s shown he can travel strongly in similar races, but his recent efforts suggest he hasn’t quite sealed the deal when pressure is applied.
If he gets an uncontested or comfortable lead, he’s not out of it. But he needs everything to fall right.
Verdict
In a race that looks likely to hinge on positioning rather than raw ability, the safest option is the one arriving in form, well drawn, and effectively well treated.
Selection: FRANCESI (IRE)
Danger: SERIOUS LOOK (IRE)
Place claims: CRIMINAL SHORE (IRE)
This looks like a race where the winner is travelling sweetly turning in. If Francesi is within striking distance at the two-furlong pole, he should take plenty of passing.
