This is the sort of mares’ handicap that rewards basics: ground, pace, and who is actually in form. With it riding soft to heavy and Timeform calling a strong pace, you can bin any cute “turn of foot” angles. It’s far more likely to be a slog where positioning and stamina decide it.
The pace makes the race
Timeform’s read is clear: a very strong gallop won’t help Catchabird but will help Missus Beeton. On this ground, that matters. When they go too hard early at Leopardstown, the last half-mile becomes survival. Horses that travel kindly and can pick up tired ones are the ones you want.
Missus Beeton looks the right type
Missus Beeton arrives off a proper heavy-ground win at Down Royal, and she did it the right way: travelled well, moved into it, and went clear. Yes, she’s been hit with an 8lb rise, but that’s the price of winning decisively, and she still profiles as one who can run another big race off a mark in the low 110s.
Crucially, today’s setup suits. With a strong pace predicted, she doesn’t need to force it — she just needs to keep tabs, let the race come apart, then play her hand from three out.
Whimsy is the danger, but not bombproof
Whimsy is the obvious threat after running a big race when third of 18 in a Listed handicap here on heavy. She’s proven at Leopardstown, proven in the mud, and she’s on a workable mark. The issue is she carries top weight (12-1), and that can feel like a stone more in a true soft-to-heavy grind. She can still win, but she’ll need a clean run and a perfectly timed ride.
Solid types to keep on side
Onefortheditch is the dependable stayer who keeps turning up and running her race. If it becomes a messy war from the top of the straight, she’s the one you can see passing beaten horses late.
Maxios Prime and Shoda both have ability, but you’re relying on improvement and a smooth passage rather than rock-solid conditions form. In this sort of race, I’d rather be with the proven mud-and-hustle types.
Verdict
If the pace is as strong as predicted, this sets up for a mare who can travel, cope with heavy ground, and finish her race.
Selection: MISSUS BEETON
Main danger: WHIMSY
Next best: ONEFORTHEDITCH
No drama, no guesswork: the race shape points one way, and Missus Beeton is the one best suited to take advantage.
