This looks a proper “position wins races” heat. The pace forecast is weak, which usually means they’ll stack up, nobody wants to commit too early, and it turns into a sprint from the home turn. In that scenario you don’t want to be playing catch-up from the back, and you don’t want a horse that only flatters to deceive in the run.
The one to beat: Huit Reflets
HUIT REFLETS brings the cleanest recent chase form. He’s having a strong season, he’s already got a chase win on the board, and his last couple of runs read like a horse who simply turns up and runs his race. He was a very good runner-up at Sedgefield last time and a small rise shouldn’t stop him. In a Class 5 novice handicap, proven reliability counts for plenty.
The only minor question is tactical: if they dawdle and he’s ridden too patiently, he could be giving away first run. But he’s shown enough grit and finishing effort to still be the one you want onside.
The danger: Singapore Trip
SINGAPORE TRIP is the obvious chaser-home type. He’s consistent, he’s been competitive since coming over fences, and he’ll likely be ridden positively under Brian Hughes. The problem is weight and shape of race. Carrying 12st in a tactical affair can be a nuisance when it turns into a dash late. He’s more “solid place” than “must win”.
The talking horse: Hawkseye View
HAWKSEYE VIEW is the interesting one because the pace set-up should suit. If it’s steadily run and he’s prominent, he can get the run of the race. That’s the upside.
The downside is just as clear: he’s got a habit of travelling into it and not getting the job done. Timeform even flags that he’s been turned over after trading much shorter than his Betfair SP. That’s a proper warning. If you’re backing him, you’re betting on a change in behaviour, not just a change in circumstances.
The rest
Wannabe is lightly raced and could step forward, but his chasing debut was poor and there’s enough in the notes to want proof before trusting him. Gonnino, Gilbertina and Lord De Vinci all need to show more in this discipline, while Paramaribo looks up against it on what he’s done over fences.
Verdict
This is not a race to get cute with. The best bet is the horse with the most solid chase profile and the least to prove.
Selection: HUIT REFLETS
Most likely to cope with whatever tactical mess unfolds and still finish his race properly. Singapore Trip is the main threat for the places, while Hawkseye View is the one you’d rather trade than trust.
