Nine runners, 0–110 company, and the early shape suggests a steady gallop rather than a searching test. Around here that often turns it tactical. Positioning and the ability to quicken off the last can matter more than raw stamina.
Whiskey On Ice sets the standard
Whiskey On Ice looks the most solid option. He stepped forward on his handicap debut at Musselburgh over 3m, travelling well and only finding one too strong late on. That form reads well for this grade and he remains lightly raced over hurdles, which is often the key in these mid-range staying handicaps.
He carries top weight but the 10lb claim offsets that and he should be suited by both trip and ground. If he builds even slightly on that latest run, he’s the one to beat.
Better Be Definite has momentum
Stablemate Better Be Definite arrives off an emphatic win at Ayr. He travelled strongly and put the race to bed in good style. The handicapper has reacted with a 7lb rise and this is a deeper race, but he’s clearly in form and still relatively lightly raced for an eight-year-old.
The question is whether that Ayr effort flattered him on heavy ground in a slightly weaker contest. At the current mark he needs to confirm he’s genuinely improved rather than simply well placed on the day.
Parish Quiz could control it
With the pace forecast on the weak side, Parish Quiz becomes interesting. He won over this course and distance in January, making all and sticking on well. If allowed an uncontested lead or a handy sit in a slowly-run affair, he could make life awkward for the market leaders.
This is tougher off a 5lb higher mark, but he’s unexposed as a stayer and tactically he may get his own way.
The rest
Broken Ice is capable on his day but returns from a break and doesn’t look obviously well treated.
Princesse Milania is generally consistent but needs to bounce back from two below-par efforts.
Broderick and Western Mount look more likely to place than win, while the remainder have questions to answer on recent form.
Verdict
This looks a race likely to revolve around the two N W Alexander runners. Of the pair, Whiskey On Ice appeals more as the one still open to progress and proven at the trip in handicap company.
If it becomes tactical, Parish Quiz is the one who could take advantage.
