Southwell 4.15 – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Maiden Hurdle (2m½f, Heavy)🏇⤵️👇

·

Heavy ground at Southwell has a habit of stripping the gloss off reputations. It’s not about who looks flash on paper, it’s about who can travel, jump and keep finding when everything turns into a grind from three out. With nine declared and an even-looking pace forecast, this shouldn’t be a messy crawl or an end-to-end burn-up. That helps the class horse.
The one to beat: Tread Carefully (IRE)
This revolves around Tread Carefully. He’s already shown a level of form the rest of these haven’t matched and, crucially, he’s done it in stronger races than this. His Southwell run in early February is the standout piece of evidence: he went forward, jumped well enough, and was only headed late by a horse who looked a proper operator. In this company, that effort reads as “banker form” if he repeats it.
The only niggle is the in-running note about him having been beaten when odds-on before. That’s less a reason to oppose and more a reminder not to treat short-priced hurdlers as certainties. But if he’s as good as the figures suggest, he should have too much in the locker.
Main danger: Nice One Eric
If anything is going to make the favourite work, it’s likely Nice One Eric. He’s from a yard that does well at the track and his hurdle form has come in races that look deeper than today’s. He’s the type who can be travelling nicely turning in while others are already rowing.
The question is whether he finishes the job. He’s been prominent and then weakened before, and heavy ground is exactly where that can happen again. Still, in a thin maiden, he’s the most realistic threat.
The place fight: Collanisi (IRE) and Snow Is In The Sky (IRE)
After the top two, it gets murkier.
Collanisi has bits and pieces that hint at ability, including bumper form that suggests he’ll cope with a slog, but his hurdling debut was scrappy and he weakened out of it. He’s one who could improve, but he’s not bombproof.
Snow Is In The Sky is the wild card. A point-to-point win screams stamina and battling qualities, which is never a bad thing in this sort of race. The flip side is the layoff and the switch into rules hurdling on heavy ground — if she’s not slick at her obstacles, the track will punish her quickly.
The rest
A few arrive with something to prove. Georgey pulled up on hurdle debut after hanging badly, Roland Garros hasn’t convinced over hurdles and has had a breathing comment attached, while Kampari, Lancier Des Obeaux and Jessie’s Giant have shown enough to suggest they’ll need this to fall apart to get involved.
Verdict
This looks set up for the proven operator.
Selection: TREAD CAREFULLY (IRE)
Biggest danger: NICE ONE ERIC
For the places: COLLANISI (IRE) and SNOW IS IN THE SKY (IRE)
If Tread Carefully jumps cleanly, he should outclass them. If he makes a mistake or idles when it matters, Nice One Eric is the one most likely to pick up the pieces.
