Staying handicaps at Haydock rarely hide much. This looks a fairly typical 0-120 contest where the race should revolve around the top few in the ratings rather than a deep field of improvers.
Ratings point to one horse
On the HorseRaceBase figures Heather Honey comes out comfortably on top with a Total rating of 322, clear of Spit Spot (290) and the rest of the field.
That advantage matters. In handicaps like this, a horse with a clear ratings edge and solid recent form tends to win more often than not.
Heather Honey fits that profile. She arrives in good nick, ran perfectly respectably in a stronger C&D race last time, and now drops back into a standard 0-120 handicap. The Sue Smith yard knows how to train staying hurdlers and the mare has already shown she stays well.
The only slight note is ground preference. Her wins have come on quicker surfaces, but conditions at Haydock are unlikely to be testing enough to cause major concern.
Main threat
Spit Spot is the obvious alternative.
She improved when stepped up to 3m earlier in the season, landing two handicaps at Perth before running in stronger company at Ascot. That effort is easily forgiven and a break since should have freshened her up.
The race may not be run at a strong pace and if it turns tactical she could find herself better positioned turning for home than some of the deeper closers.
Others with something to prove
Hard Dealt has pieces of form that give her a chance but her latest run was disappointing and she needs to bounce back.
Outer Banks is harder to weigh up after a breathing operation and first-time headgear. Improvement is possible, but it has to be taken on trust.
Freshers Week is the interesting unknown on handicap debut, though this is a demanding trip to prove yourself for the first time in this company.
The verdict
There are a few potential improvers in the line-up but the most solid option remains the one with the best figures and the strongest recent form.
Heather Honey sets the standard and looks the most likely winner.
Prediction
Heather Honey
Spit Spot
Hard Dealt
Sometimes the simple answer is the right one, and this race looks set up for the horse already proven to run well over course and distance.
