Low-grade mile handicaps at Lingfield rarely need overcomplicating. Position around the bend, proven track form and current ratings usually tell the story. This Class 6 (0–60) looks no different.
Using the HRB ratings, three horses dominate the figures:
Danehill Star – 241
Secret Road – 239
Villalobos – 233
After that the numbers drop away quickly, which already narrows the race considerably.
Danehill Star sets the standard
Danehill Star comes out top on the ratings and has already shown he handles Lingfield well. Two runs ago he won over further at the track, travelling strongly and seeing the race out well.
His latest run can be marked up. He was forced wide when trying to follow up, which is rarely ideal around Lingfield where conserving ground is vital. A cleaner trip today should see him much closer to his best.
There are also two small but important positives. The first is the booking of Tom Marquand, a significant jockey upgrade in a race at this level. The second is the application of stronger headgear, which often sharpens up horses in this grade.
If he settles in a reasonable position early, his form and rating suggest he is the one they all have to beat.
Villalobos the obvious danger
Villalobos looks the main threat. He is a previous course-and-distance winner and has a good draw to sit handy. His Kempton effort earlier in the year showed he still has enough ability to compete off this mark.
If he gets an easy lead or a prominent position without pressure, he could prove stubborn.
Secret Road has questions to answer
Secret Road is close on ratings but has two issues to overcome. His most recent run was below his earlier winter form and he now starts for a new yard. Add in a wide draw and his task becomes slightly more complicated.
He still has the ability to get involved but looks less straightforward than the two above.
The rest
So Chic is capable at this track but hasn’t shown enough recently to be convincing.
Pink Socks enjoyed a productive January but now looks firmly in the handicapper’s grip.
Potters Prince, Daddy Chill and Back Before Dark all need improvement to trouble the principals.
Verdict
The ratings, course form and race setup all point in the same direction.
Danehill Star looks the most reliable option and the most likely winner if running to his usual level.
Selection: Danehill Star
