Nine runners go to post for this six-furlong handicap on Kempton’s polytrack and the race revolves around one horse arriving in peak form.
Supreme King sets the standard
Supreme King comes into the race chasing a four-timer after winning his last three starts, the latest over this course and distance two weeks ago. That victory was solid rather than fortunate. He travelled strongly, moved to the front two furlongs out and the first pair pulled clear of the rest. It was the performance of a horse in form and well suited to Kempton’s six furlongs.
The handicapper has reacted, but not harshly. He remains on a workable mark and his record on the all-weather is consistent. More importantly, he is race-fit and arrives here with momentum, something several of his rivals lack.
Gallant the main threat
Gallant looks the most obvious danger. He ran a good race when second at Chelmsford last time, shaping well back at six furlongs after competing over further. That effort suggested he is capable of winning in this grade, but he must concede weight to the selection and does not have the same recent winning form.
Lazzar could get involved
Lazzar made good progress earlier in the winter with three wins in lower grade handicaps. He stepped up to Class 4 company at Lingfield last time and ran respectably without threatening the principals. The return of a 7 lb claimer helps his cause and he has the profile of a horse still on the upgrade, though this is another step up in competition.
Others need more
Justcallmepete ended last year with a hat-trick but his form this winter has been below that level.
Stanley Spencer has a good record at Kempton but has not shown enough in three runs this year.
Expert Agent is well treated on old form but tends to finish late without quite getting there.
Verdict
In a race where several arrive with something to prove, Supreme King is the runner with the clearest profile. He is in form, proven over course and distance and still looks fairly treated by the handicapper.
If he runs to the level of his recent victories, he should take plenty of beating and can complete the four-timer.
