Kempton 7.30 – 6f Handicap (Class 4)🏇⤵️👇

·

Eight three-year-olds line up for this competitive 0–85 sprint on Kempton’s polytrack. The pace projection looks fairly even, which normally means the winner will come from a horse able to sit handy, travel comfortably, and quicken turning for home.
Augustus Gloop sets the standard
The most solid piece of handicap form in the race belongs to Augustus Gloop. His second at Wolverhampton in January came in a similar grade and he travelled strongly before just being caught late. Connections then tried a stronger Class 2 handicap at Newcastle where he never really landed a blow, but that was clearly a tougher assignment.
Dropping back into a Class 4 off the same mark of 84 puts him right in the mix. He’s proven at the trip, proven on the all-weather, and his running style should allow him to sit just behind the pace before making his challenge in the straight.
Sparksmith the danger
Sparksmith is the obvious improver. He bolted up in a Wolverhampton maiden last month and did it with plenty in hand. That performance suggests he’s capable of progressing beyond his opening handicap mark of 80.
The question is whether that maiden form stacks up in a deeper race like this. Handicaps are often more tactical than maidens, and he now meets rivals with stronger form in this grade.
Potential but questions elsewhere
River Spey showed good juvenile form and won well at Chelmsford, but he returns from a five-month break and may just need the run.
The Lost Sock is another with ability after progressing through three runs last summer. However, he makes his handicap and all-weather debut after six months off, which adds a layer of uncertainty.
Alasrae arrives in form after winning a Wolverhampton maiden and has been consistent on the surface, though this represents a tougher handicap test.
Verdict
This looks a race where reliability may count for more than potential. Augustus Gloop already has the strongest handicap form on offer and drops back into a more suitable race after trying stronger company last time.
If he reproduces his Wolverhampton run he should go very close.
Selection: Augustus Gloop
Main danger: Sparksmith
