The 5.30 at Newcastle is a Class 4 mile handicap on the Tapeta, and at first glance it looks competitive. However, once the ratings and race setup are broken down, the picture becomes much clearer.
The pace forecast is weak. That is an important factor on Newcastle’s straight mile, because races run at a steady tempo often favour horses able to sit handy and control the race, rather than those held up off the pace.
Callianassa sets the standard
The horse that stands out on both the HRB ratings and the recent form figures is Callianassa.
She arrives here after producing a career-best effort over course and distance last time, battling well to land a 12-runner handicap. That form has already been boosted, with the runner-up winning next time out. On the numbers she also tops the HRB totals in this field and holds the best last-run figure.
Course form counts for plenty at Newcastle and Callianassa clearly handles the track. She has already won three times here, including twice over this trip, and she looks tactically well placed if the race develops steadily early.
There is a note of caution from the Timeform data suggesting she has occasionally traded short in running before finding less than expected late on. Even so, in a race lacking obvious pace she may simply be able to dictate the terms from a prominent position.
Carron the main threat
The biggest danger looks to be Carron, who returns to the all-weather after a short spell racing in Meydan. His recent turf runs abroad are better than they appear at first glance and he showed plenty of ability on artificial surfaces earlier in his career.
Trainer George Boughey has a strong strike rate at Newcastle and the booking of Billy Loughnane adds further interest. If the pace lifts more than expected, Carron is the one most likely to capitalise.
Francesi reliable but high enough in the weights
Francesi has been extremely consistent since joining Tony Carroll and has already won over course and distance this winter. He rarely runs a bad race and arrives here after another solid effort at Wolverhampton.
However, the handicapper has reacted to that recent spell of form and he now sits on a higher mark. With several recent runs in his legs he may be vulnerable to a slightly better-treated rival.
Tribal Wisdom needs a stronger gallop
Tribal Wisdom ran well when second at Southwell last week and is clearly in form, but his running style relies on a stronger pace than this race is likely to produce. If the early fractions are steady he may find himself with too much ground to make up in the closing stages.
Verdict
This race lacks obvious pace and that scenario should play to the strengths of Callianassa, who arrives in peak form and has an excellent record at Newcastle. If she secures a handy position early, she looks the one they will all have to catch.
Selection: Callianassa
Main danger: Carron
Best of the rest: Francesi
