Ayr 3.50 – Weatherbys Racing Bank Handicap Hurdle (2m, Class 5)🏇⤵️👇

·

This looks a straightforward little handicap on paper with just seven runners, but the likely race shape is key. The pace forecast suggests a slowly-run contest, which usually turns these two-mile hurdles into tactical affairs where positioning matters more than raw stamina.
In races like this at Ayr, the advantage often lies with the horses sitting handy turning for home, rather than those relying on a strong gallop to bring their stamina into play.
Platin Moon sets the standard
Platin Moon (FR) brings the most solid profile into the race. He already has a course-and-distance win on heavy ground from January, proving both his effectiveness at Ayr and his ability to handle testing conditions.
He followed that with a respectable third at Musselburgh and continues to look well treated around this level. With a weak pace expected, he also looks the runner most likely to get the right tactical position, which could prove decisive in such a small field.
Trainer N.W. Alexander also has a strong recent record in this race, another small positive in a contest where several runners arrive with question marks.
Main opposition
She’s Notjoeking bounced back to form when winning at Newcastle 13 days ago and retains the assistance of a 7 lb claiming rider. The concern is consistency, as that win came after a quiet spell, and she now runs from a slightly higher mark.
The Coffey Boy arrives in form after edging out Velvet Vulcan here over further last month. That form is solid for the grade, although the drop back to two miles in a race lacking early pace may not suit quite as well.
Velvet Vulcan has been knocking on the door around Ayr and the return to a shorter trip could help settle him, though his tendency to race keenly may work against him if the early tempo is steady.
Others
Nakassama returns from a break with a first-time tongue tie and is difficult to assess after mixed form last season. Belvedere Bhoy and Bray Dale both need significant improvement on recent efforts to feature.
Verdict
In a race likely to be decided by tactics rather than stamina, Platin Moon (FR) looks the most dependable option. Proven at the track, effective in soft ground and likely to be positioned prominently, he sets the standard in a modest contest.
Selection: Platin Moon (FR)
Main dangers: She’s Notjoeking, The Coffey Boy.
