Ayr 4:53 – Nights In Venice Looks the Bet in Tactical Handicap Chase🏇⤵️👇

·

Friday’s 4:53 at Ayr is a modest Class 5 staying handicap chase over just beyond three miles, but despite the small six-runner field it presents an interesting tactical puzzle.
The key factor here is pace – or the lack of it. Timeform expect a very weak early gallop, and races like this are rarely won by horses coming from miles off the speed. Positioning will be critical.
With that in mind, Nights In Venice makes plenty of appeal.
Donald Whillans’ veteran sits top of the HRB ratings and comes here in solid recent form, finishing placed on his last three starts. Those efforts came over slightly further trips where he looked to simply run out of petrol late on. This drop back to around three miles could prove ideal.
Crucially, he is now 12 lb below the mark he won from at Ayr, and course form in these low-grade staying handicaps is never a bad thing. In a race lacking depth, he looks the most reliable option and should be ridden prominently – a big advantage given the likely slow pace.
The obvious danger is Torosay, who arrives after two strong seconds at this track this season. On pure recent form she probably sets the standard and clearly handles testing conditions. The concern is that she has developed a habit of finishing second and may again find one too good if the race turns tactical.
King Horse is more speculative. He showed improvement when second on his chasing debut at Musselburgh, but that was over a much shorter trip and this step up to three miles asks a serious stamina question.
Of the remainder, Good Work has long been hard to win with, Bennys Jenny has plenty to prove on chasing debut, and Euchan Falls arrives after a string of pulled-up efforts.
All things considered, this looks a race where track position and handicap mark could decide matters rather than outright class. Nights In Venice ticks those boxes and, at around the 3/1 mark, looks the most sensible betting proposition in a trappy little contest.
