Dundalk handicaps are rarely straightforward, but this one revolves around a very familiar name. Nikki Swango has built an exceptional record at this track and arrives with the strongest overall profile on both HRB ratings and recent form.
The Adrian McGuinness mare sits clear at the top of the HRB totals with a rating of 339, a sizeable margin over the rest of the field. More importantly, those numbers reflect what we already know from the formbook. She has won four of her last six starts over this course and distance, and even when stepping out of this grade at Newcastle last time she ran a perfectly respectable second.
Back at Dundalk, over her optimum trip, and drawn well in stall six, she sets the standard. These winter handicaps at the track are often dominated by horses in peak form who handle the surface, and Nikki Swango ticks both boxes emphatically.
There are a couple with credible claims if the favourite underperforms. Lahore Da King is a consistent sort with two course-and-distance wins to his name. He has been holding his form well in similar races and the draw in stall four gives him every chance of securing a good position early. He lacks the standout ratings of the favourite but should run his race again and looks a solid each-way option.
Mehman also deserves respect. His recent Dundalk form figures read well and he has been knocking on the door in similar company. However, stall thirteen is far from ideal over seven furlongs here and that wide draw could force him to do more work than ideal.
Recent maiden winner Battle Borne is another with improving form, but stepping back into handicap company demands more and he now faces deeper opposition than when getting off the mark here a fortnight ago.
Further down the field there are plenty with course experience, such as Clonmacash and Notforalongtime, but both look vulnerable against rivals arriving with stronger recent profiles.
In truth the race does not require much overthinking. Nikki Swango has the best ratings, the best course form and arrives in peak condition. If reproducing anything close to her recent Dundalk efforts she should prove very hard to beat.
