Friday night handicaps at Dundalk are rarely straightforward, but the 6f Floodlit Friday Nights Handicap looks set up nicely for a horse arriving here in form and still well treated by the handicapper.
The pace forecast suggests this will be run at a proper gallop, which is typical for Dundalk sprints. Several habitual front-runners are in the line-up and that should ensure a strong tempo from the outset. In races like this, those who can sit just off the speed and finish strongly often come out on top.
Bold Optimist the One to Beat
The one that fits that profile best is Bold Optimist.
He returned from a six-month break here three weeks ago and ran a cracker when finishing a close third over 5f, beaten only a quarter of a length. That run suggested two things: he retains plenty of ability and the run should have brought him forward fitness-wise.
Crucially, he is a course-and-distance winner, which counts for plenty around Dundalk where track experience is often a big advantage. Off a mark of 71 he looks well treated on earlier form and with a strong pace likely he should get the race run to suit.
Go Out – Knocking on the Door
Go Out is the obvious danger. Since joining his current yard he has finished runner-up on his last three starts at Dundalk, including twice in handicaps. His consistency is admirable and he clearly handles the surface well.
However, he is starting to develop a reputation as a horse that finds one too good, and that raises the question of whether he is as straightforward as his form figures suggest.
Ohailbhic Has the Ability but the Draw Hurts
Ohailbhic caught the eye when third over 7f here last time, meeting trouble in running before finishing strongly. With Colin Keane booked for the ride, the intent is obvious.
The problem is the draw. Stall 12 is far from ideal over this trip at Dundalk, where high numbers can often find themselves on the back foot early.
Others to Consider
Recent winner Masked Angel arrives in form after landing a C&D handicap last month, though he now steps back up in grade and may find this a little tougher.
Veteran Inishmot Prince is a multiple Dundalk winner and can never be completely dismissed around here, but at eight years old he is becoming increasingly inconsistent.
Verdict
With race fitness now on his side and conditions in his favour, Bold Optimist looks primed to build on his encouraging return and regain the winning thread.
