The 6.30 at Newcastle is a competitive Class 3 handicap over seven furlongs on Tapeta, but the race looks fairly straightforward when the ratings, recent form and likely race shape are taken together.
On the figures, Doctor Khan Junior stands out. His HorseRaceBase total of 372.5 is comfortably the highest in the field and he also posts the strongest speed and conditions ratings. He arrives here after a solid win at Southwell where he showed a good attitude, regaining the lead late on to get the job done. That performance confirmed he remains in good form and still has the tools to compete effectively at this level.
The likely pace scenario also works in his favour. Newcastle’s straight seven furlongs often rewards runners who race prominently, especially when the tempo is not overly strong. With the projected pace only even, Doctor Khan Junior should be able to hold a good position early and use his proven stamina at the trip to take control late on.
Aisling Oscar is an obvious danger. He has been one of the most progressive all-weather performers this winter, stringing together an impressive winning run before a below-par effort last time. If he returns to his earlier form he is clearly capable of being involved again, particularly as he is well treated on older ratings.
Talis Evolvere also enters calculations. He has been consistent in similar company and his overall rating puts him firmly in the mix. However, he was beaten by Doctor Khan Junior last time and there is little to suggest the form should be reversed under similar conditions.
Last year’s winner Nikovo is another capable handicapper but his hold-up style could leave him with plenty to do if the pace proves steady, which is often difficult to overcome in races like this.
Taking everything into account, the race sets up well for Doctor Khan Junior, who combines the best current figures with a run style that suits the likely shape of the contest.
