This 7f Class 6 handicap for three-year-olds looks a fairly typical all-weather contest at the grade: several exposed types with solid course form, mixed with a couple of handicap debutants who could easily be better than their marks.
The pace projection suggests an even gallop, which should favour horses able to travel comfortably rather than those relying on a strong pace collapse. The draw notes also hint that low numbers may be slightly disadvantaged, which could influence how the race unfolds on Newcastle’s straight track.
The most interesting runner is Kingofthecarnival. He has only run three times in novice company and showed little at the time, but that profile often signals a horse being brought along with handicaps in mind. Archie Watson’s runners returning from a break have historically performed well and the colt is drawn wide in stall 12, which could be a positive given the suggested draw bias. Off a mark of 59 he does not need dramatic improvement to be competitive in a race of this depth.
Dream Forever looks the main threat after finishing second here on his return from a five-month absence. That run was a clear step forward and the move up from 6f to 7f should suit. If he builds on that effort he is likely to be involved again, particularly carrying a light weight off a mark of 52.
Course form brings Popty Ping firmly into the picture. She has been remarkably consistent at Newcastle, finishing in the frame in six of seven starts here. Her recent second over a mile showed she remains in good order and the drop back to 7f should help her travel more comfortably. However, with the race unlikely to be strongly run she may again find it difficult to get past everything late.
Archangel Josepi also has claims after returning to form when third here last time. The draw in stall 11 is helpful and he remains competitive off his current mark, though his overall profile suggests he may again find one or two with greater upside.
Overall, this race may hinge on which of the less exposed runners improves most. Kingofthecarnival fits that description best and looks the most likely winner if ready after his break, while Dream Forever and the reliable Popty Ping should ensure he does not have things his own way.
