Big-field Irish maiden hurdles at this time of year often follow a familiar pattern: a powerful yard arrives with the strongest form in the race and the rest are playing catch-up. This renewal looks no different.
Recent history of the race is worth noting. Three of the last four runnings were won by runners from the yard of Gordon Elliott, all five-year-olds carrying 11-12, and all arriving with solid maiden hurdle form rather than raw bumper potential. The trend is clear — proven hurdle form counts for plenty at Gowran, especially on heavy ground.
This year Elliott relies on Manoir De Mirande, and on the balance of the evidence he sets the standard.
The Favourite
Manoir De Mirande arrives off a strong second over course and distance last month on heavy ground. That effort is comfortably the best piece of recent form in the race and, crucially, it confirmed he handles the track, the ground and the trip.
His profile is straightforward: a French bumper winner, placed efforts since switching to hurdles, and now running for a yard that targets these races effectively. With Jack Kennedy booked, the signal from the yard is clear.
Timeform’s pace notes suggest prominent racers are favoured here and Manoir De Mirande is likely to sit handy. If he gets into a rhythm near the front, he simply has the best form credentials in the field.
There is one caveat. He has previously travelled strongly before being caught late, so he isn’t bombproof. But against largely exposed or inexperienced opposition, his form still stands out.
Main Dangers
Bulgaden Castle looks the most reliable rival. His form figures of 3-2-2 show consistency and he ran well again when second at Punchestown on heavy ground last time. The problem is that he may lack the upside of the favourite and could simply find one too strong again.
Minella Boss is another to consider. A decent Flat performer, he stepped forward when second in a Punchestown juvenile hurdle. There should be more to come and a first-time tongue tie could eke out further improvement. The question is whether he handles conditions as well as the favourite.
Of the bigger priced runners, Le Tatoue Madrik shaped with promise when third at Fairyhouse and is open to further progress. He is not without place claims if stepping forward again.
The Rest
Several runners are making their hurdling debuts or arrive with limited form, including newcomers from the yards of Gavin Cromwell and others. While Irish maidens can occasionally throw up a surprise debutant, the depth of proven form near the top of the market makes that scenario less likely here.
Verdict
Heavy ground, a big field and a race that tends to reward proven hurdle form rather than potential.
Manoir De Mirande has already produced the best piece of form in the race, he has proven himself at Gowran, and he represents the trainer with the strongest record in this contest.
If he reproduces his latest run, he should take plenty of beating.
Selection: Manoir De Mirande
Main danger: Bulgaden Castle
Best each-way value: Le Tatoue Madrik
A straightforward race on paper — and one where the favourite has the clearest path to victory.
