6.45 Dundalk – Willie Buckley Memorial Apprentice Handicap (1m4f)

·

Dundalk continues with a typical low-grade staying handicap where recent course form is usually the strongest guide. The surface, trip and track configuration mean experience here counts for plenty, and several in this field arrive with solid winter form at the venue.
On the HRB ratings, Without Love sits clearly on top with a 254.8 total, comfortably ahead of the field. More importantly, those numbers are backed up by current form. He won here in January and followed that with two solid placed efforts over the same trip. His last run, when third over course and distance, suggested he remains in good heart and is well treated off a mark of 49.
The pace map suggests the race could be run strongly. That scenario should suit horses finishing late rather than those forcing things early. Without Love tends to be ridden patiently and has already shown he can finish strongly in these Dundalk handicaps. In a race lacking reliable winners, he looks the most solid option.
Syosset rates the main threat. He is a course-and-distance winner from November and shaped well when third here on his most recent start. The draw in stall one is a positive and he receives a useful 7 lb claim. The slight concern is the 105-day absence, which leaves a small question about fitness.
Deluca Chop also enters the conversation after finishing second over course and distance last time. That was one of his better recent runs and confirmed he still retains the ability to compete at this level. The issue with him is his strike rate – just one win from 24 starts – which makes him more reliable for a place than for victory.
Captain Hanley is another with consistent Dundalk form. He was fourth over this trip last month and remains competitively weighted. However, he has developed a habit of finding one or two too good and may again struggle to get his head in front.
Timeform’s analyst leans towards Doctor Grace, who ran well here in January before a less favourable run last time when forced wide. She has the ability to get involved if things fall right, although she still has to prove she truly stays this trip as strongly as some of her rivals.
Overall, this race looks a straightforward ratings call. Without Love brings the best recent Dundalk form, the strongest HRB figures and a running style that should suit the likely pace of the race.
