Basement grade, exposed horses, but still a race that can be solved with the right angles.
Sixteen runners line up for this 0–60 handicap and, as is often the case at Dundalk, the race revolves around a handful of regulars who know the track well. When analysing races like this, current form and course experience matter far more than theoretical handicap plots.
The HorseRaceBase ratings point clearly to Distillate, who tops the figures with a total of 254.2, comfortably clear of the rest of the field. His latest run here over 7f reads well in the context of this race. He finished second, beaten only narrowly after being given plenty to do. With a stronger pace likely over the mile, the race should set up perfectly for a horse who finishes his races strongly.
The only obvious negative is the wide draw, which can be tricky at Dundalk, but if he can slot in early he looks the most likely winner.
The consistent Alex Belardo sits second on the HRB figures and arrives in solid form after back-to-back thirds at this track. The issue with him is obvious: he finds it hard to get his head in front. One win from twenty-one starts tells its own story. He travels well and runs his race, but he has become the type that punters rely on for place money rather than victories.
Desert Of The Sea is more interesting from a handicap perspective. Still racing from a very low mark of 42, he has shown clear signs of life with a second and third at Dundalk in recent weeks. Those runs suggest he is operating well above his official rating. If ridden with a little more restraint early on, he has the ability to be involved again.
Timeform make a case for Heart Of Darkness, who finished second here in January and was not seen to best effect on his latest start. That effort can be forgiven, and a return to that earlier form would put him firmly in the mix, although the overall profile remains inconsistent.
Others in the race are much harder to trust. Imperial Fighter has bits of form but arrives off a poor run and can be slow away. Amemri is a six-time course winner but looks to be on the downgrade this season, while veterans like Punk Poet appear to be running more on past reputation than current ability.
Verdict
These low-grade Dundalk handicaps are rarely pretty, but the numbers and recent form point firmly in one direction.
Distillate looks the most solid option in the race. His latest effort was strong, the mile should suit, and a well-run race will play to his strengths. If overcoming the draw, he is the one most likely to deliver.
Prediction
Distillate
Desert Of The Sea
Alex Belardo
Heart Of Darkness
Not a race full of hidden improvers, but Distillate brings the best recent form and the strongest ratings to the table, which is usually enough to win races of this nature at Dundalk.
