Small field, tactical race, and a clear angle if you strip it back properly.
Only four runners go to post for this Class 4 mares’ handicap hurdle at Ayr and the pace forecast suggests it will be run at a crawl. In races like this, tactics often matter more than raw ability. Whoever gets the run of the race near the front will have a major advantage turning for home.
Looking at the field through both the HRB ratings and Timeform notes, the race revolves around two mares.
Fox’s Fancy carries top weight and heads the HRB figures, but her recent form doesn’t inspire confidence. She has been running respectably without threatening and last time over three miles at Ayr she travelled well before weakening late on heavy ground. Dropping slightly in trip helps, but giving weight away in soft conditions is never easy. She looks vulnerable despite having the best rating in the field.
Tread Softly Now is a course winner and a likeable, consistent mare, but the step up to this trip raises questions. Her better efforts have come around two miles and she was comfortably held last time at Sedgefield. In a steadily run race she may simply lack the finishing kick to land the prize.
The one arriving in the best recent form is Bollin Matilda. Her second at Musselburgh last month was a strong effort, pulling clear with the winner and finishing well ahead of the rest of the field. The addition of a tongue-tie appears to have sharpened her up and she remains well treated despite a small rise in the weights. On pure recent form she has a big chance.
However, the tactical shape of the race could swing things.
With very little pace on paper, Keep On Cobbling is the one most likely to sit handy or even dictate matters. She made a winning handicap debut at Sedgefield earlier in the season and her disappointing run at Hereford can be forgiven as the drop in trip looked against her. The return to a more suitable distance, combined with a break to freshen her up, makes her a serious player.
In slowly run staying races, positioning is everything. If Keep On Cobbling gets an uncontested lead or sits prominently off a gentle pace, she could control the race from the front.
Bollin Matilda is the obvious danger if the race turns into a stamina test late on, while Fox’s Fancy may struggle to concede weight all round.
Verdict:
This looks set up for KEEP ON COBBLING, who should get the tactical advantage in a slowly run race and has the profile of a mare still improving in handicaps.
Selection: Keep On Cobbling
Main danger: Bollin Matilda
