Gowran Park 5.23 – Mullins Looks Set to Continue His Grip on the Doc’s Bumper🏇⤵️👇

·

The 5.23 at Gowran Park is a 2m2f heavy-ground bumper that has become something of a private playground for Willie Mullins in recent seasons.
The last three renewals tell the story clearly.
2025 – Ksar Fatal (Evens)
2024 – Port Joulain (11/8)
2023 – Tullyhill (4/6)
All trained by Mullins and all ridden by Patrick Mullins. The yard targets these late-season Irish bumpers with well-prepared types and the race often falls apart for anything coming from smaller operations.
This year’s renewal does not look particularly strong on paper, which immediately puts the Mullins runner Dromard front and centre.
The Favourite
Dromard makes his debut for the Mullins yard and, while his pedigree does not scream superstar, the stable record in races like this demands respect. The Doctor Dino gelding is a typical Mullins bumper type — a five-year-old making his first start in a race lacking depth.
With Patrick Mullins in the saddle, the message is clear. The stable knows exactly what is required to win this contest and the market has already latched on.
He does not need to be exceptional to win this.
The Main Threat
The only runner bringing solid racecourse form is Reckless from the Gordon Elliott yard.
He showed little in bumpers but improved significantly when switched to hurdles, finishing second in an 18-runner maiden at Fairyhouse on New Year’s Day. That is arguably the strongest piece of form on offer.
Dropping back into a bumper is an interesting move. It may simply be a confidence play, but if he reproduces that Fairyhouse effort he will set the standard.
Others With Something to Prove
Pinndar was heavily backed for his debut at Fairyhouse but ran well below expectations, finishing fifth after going off favourite. That suggests the yard thought plenty of him beforehand, so improvement is possible, but he still has plenty to find.
Line Speed has shown only modest ability in two bumper starts and looks exposed for this level.
The remainder of the field are debutants from smaller yards and would need to be well above average to trouble the principals.
Pace and Race Shape
The pace forecast suggests no strong early tempo. In slowly run bumpers at Gowran Park, horses that race prominently tend to hold an advantage, especially in testing conditions.
However, these races are often decided by class rather than tactics, and the stronger yards usually come to the fore in the closing stages.
Verdict
This looks like another race where the Mullins machine holds all the aces.
Reckless brings the best form into the contest and is the obvious danger, but bumpers like this are routinely won by well-prepared Mullins debutants.
If Dromard is anywhere near the standard typically expected from the yard, he should have the ability to take this.
Selection: Dromard
Danger: Reckless
Each-way shout: Pinndar
Another Gowran bumper may well be heading back to Closutton.
