Small-field novice handicap chases over staying trips are often tactical affairs and this 3m1½f Class 4 at Hereford looks exactly that. Timeform already flag the likely scenario: very little pace. In races like this positioning is everything and those able to sit handy and jump accurately usually dominate.
With only six runners and a compressed handicap (108–121), there are not many hiding places.
Bective Abbey – knocking loudly on the door
Bective Abbey looks the most solid option in the field and both the HRB ratings (347 – top in the race) and the Timeform view point the same way.
The Nicky Henderson-trained 8-year-old has finished runner-up on all three chase starts, but importantly he has been improving with each run. His latest effort at Kempton over 3m was particularly strong. He travelled well, jumped soundly and only found one too good late on. That form has already started to work out.
Crucially, this race looks weaker than the Kempton contest, and the extra emphasis on stamina around Hereford should suit him well.
The tactical picture also plays into his hands. In a race lacking obvious pace, James Bowen should be able to keep him prominent, and Bowen has an excellent strike rate when riding favourites in chases.
Simply put, this looks like a very good opportunity for him to finally get his head in front over fences.
Mountain Mike – the unexposed danger
If anything is going to improve past the selection it could be Mountain Mike.
He returned from a long absence when third at Exeter over 3m on heavy ground, a run that looked very much like a fitness exercise. The Newland/Insole yard are shrewd operators and their runners often step forward significantly second time out.
However, he still has to prove his jumping under pressure and was beaten 20 lengths on that reappearance. Improvement is expected, but he needs plenty.
The rest
Gris Majeur is consistent and likes Hereford but returns after 100 days off and may find the slow pace against him.
Golan Loop won over this course and distance earlier in the season but his Wincanton pull-up last time raises questions.
Mombasa and I Play County both look to have too much to find on recent form.
Verdict
Everything about the race points towards Bective Abbey.
He brings the strongest recent form, the best HRB rating, proven stamina and a race setup likely to play perfectly to his strengths.
In a small-field staying chase where jumping and position matter most, he simply sets the standard.
Selection
BECTIVE ABBEY 🏇
If he jumps cleanly and sits close to the pace, this looks his race to lose.
