The 20:30 at Chelmsford is a small-field Class 5 handicap over a mile and, on paper, it looks a race that will be decided more by positioning and race tempo than raw ability.
Timeform’s pace projection highlights a very weak pace scenario, which is often crucial around Chelmsford. In steadily run mile handicaps here, the advantage frequently lies with horses racing prominently or sitting close to the lead, as it becomes difficult for hold-up runners to make up ground in the straight.
This immediately puts the spotlight on Royal Jet.
Tony Carroll’s six-year-old arrives in excellent form, having won four of his last six starts before finishing a solid second at Lingfield last week. He remains on a workable mark of 63, which still looks lenient considering his recent consistency. Importantly, he is drawn stall 2, giving William Carson the option to secure a prominent position early in what could become a tactical affair.
The slight question mark is the step back up to a mile, with most of his recent wins coming around seven furlongs. However, in a race lacking early pace, the trip may actually play to his strengths if he can control or sit close to the tempo.
Renesmee, the Timeform selection, is the obvious danger. She shaped well when third at Wolverhampton last time after being poorly positioned and was only beaten half a length. A previous course-and-distance winner, she is clearly well suited by these conditions. The concern, however, is tactical. If this race develops into the predicted crawl, she risks being played too late again.
Antiquity comes here in good form after finally getting his head in front at Lingfield following two seconds. He is progressing steadily but now has to deal with a 4 lb rise and a wider draw, which may force him to work harder for position early.
H Key Lails is another with strong course credentials and could be one of the few to go forward. However, he has developed a reputation for finding ways to get beaten, often trading short in running before failing to finish the job.
The remainder of the field look up against it on recent form. Nordic Norm continues to run respectably without threatening, Pivotal Days returns from a lengthy absence for a new yard, and Dalmally has shown little since changing stables.
With the likely race shape favouring those near the pace, Royal Jet looks ideally placed to take advantage. He is the form horse in the race, well drawn, and arrives here thriving.
In a race that may turn tactical, he looks the one most likely to be in the right place at the right time.
