Carlisle 4:25 – Hudson De Grugy Looks the Solid Play🏇⤵️👇

·

A small but competitive field lines up for the CopyBet Handicap Chase at Carlisle, a Class 4 staying contest over just beyond three miles on soft ground. With only seven runners declared and a weak pace forecast, this race could turn tactical rather than the usual gruelling Carlisle stamina test.
In races like this the emphasis often shifts from outright stamina to positioning and efficiency over fences, and that scenario looks tailor-made for Hudson De Grugy.
Hudson De Grugy sets the standard
Sam England’s Hudson De Grugy arrives here in good order and brings the strongest recent form to the table. He produced a solid effort when second over course and distance 20 days ago, travelling like the best horse for much of the race before being worn down late on.
Importantly, he runs here off the same mark of 120, so there is no handicap penalty to overcome. His earlier win at Wetherby over three miles on soft ground also confirms he handles these conditions well.
In a race lacking obvious pace, his ability to travel comfortably and hold a prominent position could prove decisive. Around Carlisle, that can be a major advantage.
Lady In The Park the main danger
The biggest threat may come from Lady In The Park, a lightly raced mare from the Lucinda Russell yard. She returned from a long break with a runner-up finish here over 2m5f, shaping as though the outing would bring her forward.
The step back up to three miles looks a logical move and she retains the blinkers that helped her win at Perth last spring. With relatively few miles on the clock, she remains open to improvement.
Others need more
Super Citizen is a course-and-distance winner and ran well when third here last time, but at twelve years old he may find younger rivals finishing stronger.
Grandad’s Cap is interesting after his Market Rasen win but disappointed when favourite at Leicester last time, while Latenightrumble needs to prove his latest run was the start of a revival after a quiet season.
Both Mt Fugi Park and Marown arrive with something to prove on recent form.
Verdict
This does not look a particularly deep contest and the most convincing profile belongs to Hudson De Grugy. He is proven at the trip, handles the track, and arrives here on the back of a strong course effort.
If the race unfolds as the pace map suggests, his ability to sit handy and travel smoothly could prove the decisive factor.
Selection: Hudson De Grugy
Main danger: Lady In The Park
