Carlisle 5.00 – Holly Bird sets the standard🏇⤵️👇

·

The 5.00 at Carlisle is not a deep mares’ handicap, and that usually means there is no point dressing it up. This looks like a race between Holly Bird and Vanilla Dancer, with the rest needing either a revival or sudden improvement.
Holly Bird is the one to beat. She won well at Newcastle last time, travelling strongly and putting the race to bed in a way that suggested she had more in hand than the bare result. A 6lb rise is fair, but not enough to put me off. In this grade, that sort of recent, convincing win counts for plenty. She looks straightforward, arrives in form, and the drop back in trip should not be a problem if she gets into a good rhythm early.
Timeform’s view makes plenty of sense as well. The pace angle points towards those racing prominently, and that should suit Holly Bird. Around Carlisle on soft ground, you do not want to be making life harder than it needs to be. If Brian Hughes gets her into a handy position, she has every chance of controlling the race from there.
The main danger is Vanilla Dancer. Her recent form is rock solid for this level and her HRB figure is the standout on the card. She won at Catterick last time and had been knocking on the door before that, so there is no doubt she turns up in good order. The question is whether she has as much upside as Holly Bird. She looks reliable, but perhaps not quite as well treated.
Queen Roslyn is the one with a bit of each-way appeal. She has not done much over hurdles yet, but her Flat form says stamina is her game and this stiffer test could bring out more. She is not the percentage call to win, though, and needs to show she can transfer that staying ability to this sphere.
Last year’s winner Lady Babs is well handicapped on old form and is now lower than when winning this race twelve months ago. That is the positive. The negative is that she has shown very little this season, and it takes a leap of faith to expect a sudden return to form.
Disco Annie has course-and-distance form, which puts her in the conversation, but her recent efforts leave her with enough to prove. Georgie’s Malt is another who may have more to offer in handicaps, though this trip is not an obvious plus. The remainder look up against it on what they have shown so far.
So the race comes back to the same conclusion. Holly Bird has the strongest recent form, the best profile for further progress, and the race setup should suit. Vanilla Dancer is the solid alternative, but if you are trying to find the winner rather than just a safe runner, Holly Bird is the one.
Verdict
Holly Bird to beat Vanilla Dancer, with Queen Roslyn best of the rest.
