This does not look a race that needs overcomplicating.
The 2.30 at Plumpton is a four-runner novices’ handicap chase over 2m4f, and the standout is Rap Soul. He made a winning chase and handicap debut over this very course and distance 14 days ago, and he did it in the style of a horse well ahead of his mark. He travelled strongly, jumped soundly enough and put the race to bed with plenty in hand. The handicapper has reacted with a 12lb rise, but in a race like this that may not be enough to stop him.
What makes Rap Soul so solid is that he is the one horse in the field with clear scope to improve again. His hurdle form was modest, but fences have brought about immediate progress. That is often the way with these types, and Richard Bandey’s runner looks a straightforward fit for Plumpton. Timeform’s pace angle is also in his favour. In a race expected to be run at a weak tempo, being prominent is a big help, and Rap Soul looks the runner most likely to get the ideal tactical trip.
The main threat is Carpe Diem, who has perked up since the visor went on. He won at Huntingdon on heavy ground and followed that with a fair second at the same track. The 7lb claim helps and he arrives in form, which is more than can be said for the other pair. The concern is whether this setup suits him quite as well. He may not get the same test here, and on better ground in a tactical race he looks vulnerable to a less exposed rival.
Lunar Ocean is not without ability, but he has had plenty of chances. He has finished second often enough over fences, which tells its own story, and his latest run at Catterick was poor. First-time visor replaces cheekpieces, so they are clearly searching for improvement, but he is hard to trust. In a race where position will matter, he could again find himself on the back foot.
Goguenard looks the weakest of the four. He has not shown enough over fences, his recent hurdle form is uninspiring, and a return to chasing needs to spark a revival that is hard to see coming.
There is also a small race trend worth noting. Recent winners of this contest have tended to be horses towards the top of the weights rather than lower-grade exposed types sneaking in off a light mark. That again points straight back to Rap Soul, who fits the profile of the progressive novice far better than his rivals.
There are no guarantees in small-field chases, especially if the pace turns messy, but this looks a case of the obvious horse being the right horse.
Verdict: Rap Soul is the most likely winner and should take plenty of beating. Carpe Diem is the danger, with Lunar Ocean looking best of the rest.
