This is not a deep race and there is no need to overcomplicate it. The one that makes most appeal is Cosmic Soul.
Patrick Neville’s six-year-old does not top the HRB figures, but he is close enough on the numbers and looks to have the right profile for this contest. His HRB rating of 269 puts him firmly in the mix, and the more important point is that he arrives here in decent nick. He won on the Flat at Southwell in January, so fitness is assured, and his second over hurdles at Perth last autumn reads well in the context of a race like this.
Timeform’s pace view adds to the case. They expect a weak gallop and note that prominent racers are usually favoured here. That should suit Cosmic Soul well. In a modest Sedgefield hurdle, being on the front end or close to it can make all the difference, and this looks the sort of race where tactical position will matter plenty.
The main danger is Captain Cool. He has the best HRB figure in the field at 287, has winning course-and-distance form, and had been running well before unseating at Doncaster last time. On raw ability, he is the obvious threat. The slight concern is that he looks a bit more exposed now, and off 101 with 11-13 on his back, he may not have much room in hand.
Blackwater Lilly is not easy to dismiss on handicap debut. She is rated 102, carries top weight and won a Bangor maiden hurdle last spring. But her recent Flat efforts have been underwhelming and she comes with more questions than the front two.
Newport is the each-way alternative. He won at Musselburgh in December and has had a breathing operation since a poor run at Catterick. That could bring about a revival, but he still has something to prove after pulling up last time.
As for Lahire, he has bits of form that give him a chance and Donald McCain’s Sedgefield record is a plus, but he has become hard to trust. He is now well into a losing run and looks more likely to threaten the places than win.
The rest look up against it. King Kodiak ran better than expected at Carlisle on Sunday, but that was a surprise effort at huge odds. Warrior Lion, Jet Approach and Susiesparkle all need major improvement.
There is not much strength in depth here, so it makes sense to side with the horse who is fit, on a workable mark and likely to get the run of the race. That points straight at Cosmic Soul.
Verdict
Cosmic Soul to win, with Captain Cool the main danger and Newport the one to consider for the places.
