This is not a race to overcomplicate.
The 5.30 at Newcastle is a poor staying handicap and the shape of the race looks more important than the bare form. Timeform has it down as a weak pace and HRB says much the same, with no clear front-runner, only moderate pressure, and a low chance of the race falling apart. That points firmly towards a horse who can sit handy and get first run, not one that needs a strong gallop and luck in running.
That brings us to Colinski.
He looks the right horse for the job. He is one of the least exposed runners in the field, he is only a four-year-old, and he has already shown he stays when runner-up over 17f at Bath in October. The mark of 55 is workable and, in a race full of exposed older handicappers, he is the one with the most scope to do a bit better.
Just as important is the tactical angle. HRB has him as a prominent racer, and that is exactly what you want here. In races like this at Newcastle, especially over this trip, a horse that can hold position and kick before the stayers get organised has a major edge. Timeform’s note sums it up well: this race setup is a negative for some, but a positive for Colinski.
The main threat is Billy Bathgate, and there is no knocking his consistency. He is a course-and-distance winner, he is reliable at this level, and he is almost certain to run his race. The problem is that he is often doing his best work late, and that can be a bad habit in a steadily-run affair. He may once again finish strongly without ever quite getting there in time.
Free Pic is another with claims after some fair recent efforts, but this is a much stiffer stamina test and that is not a given. Angelardo is unexposed and comes here off a good second over 12.5f at the track, but Timeform is right to flag the pace concern. He looks the type who would be better served by a stronger-run race.
The rest have bits and pieces of form, but most of them look either unreliable, exposed, or badly suited by the likely tactical setup.
So the call is straightforward. In a weak Class 6 where position could be everything, Colinski looks the one most likely to get the run of the race and make it count.
Verdict
Colinski to win.
