Tuesday evening’s 6.45 at Southwell is a typical low-grade sprint handicap: plenty with chances on old form, but only a handful arriving with the right mix of recent form, track suitability and handicap scope.
This does not look a race to get clever in. The percentage call is I Need Your Love.
He has been knocking on the door in similar company and his recent efforts make him the one to beat. He was beaten only narrowly at Newcastle over 5f, then followed up with another solid second over 6f at Southwell. In a race where plenty of these are exposed, inconsistent or returning from breaks, he is the one bringing the clearest and most reliable current form to the table.
Off a mark of 68, he does not look thrown in, but he does look well enough treated to win a race of this nature. More importantly, he is still a 4yo and has more room for progress than most of these older sprinters, many of whom look stuck on their marks.
The main threat is Shalaa Asker, and he is an obvious one. He has been a good servant through the winter, winning three times, including over course and distance. His HRB figure is the best in the field and Tom Marquand is a notable booking. He is proven at the track, proven at the trip and arrives in decent nick. There is not much to knock, other than the fact he may now be vulnerable off his current mark after a busy spell.
The pace angle does add a bit of intrigue. Timeform expects a strong gallop and suggests that could help those racing prominently, with Popular Dream mentioned as one who could benefit. That is worth noting because he is a multiple course-and-distance winner and knows exactly how to operate around here. His recent form is only fair, but in this grade that does not rule him out of the frame.
Of the rest, Lucius Aurelius is not dismissed. He should come on for his recent return and the cheekpieces go back on, but stall 11 is not ideal in a race where track position matters. Birkenhead has bits of course form that give him a squeak, while Keldeo and Herakles both have ability but return from breaks and may just need the run.
As for the recent race trends, there is not enough history to make a big song and dance about it, but the last two winners were not wild outsiders and both had enough class for this level. That points you back towards the obvious pair rather than trying to force a big-priced angle.
So the verdict is plain enough. I Need Your Love is the runner with the strongest recent profile and the fewest questions to answer. Shalaa Asker is the danger because of his course-and-distance record and solid winter campaign. Popular Dream appeals most of those at bigger odds if the race sets up for a prominent runner.
