This does not look a deep novice and the race sets up nicely for Into The Light.
Charlie Appleby’s colt made a good start at Lingfield, winning over 10f in a race that was not strongly run. He still got the job done with something in hand, which is important because this Southwell contest also looks likely to be run at a steady tempo. In small-field races like this, tactical speed and the ability to travel smoothly matter plenty, and he looks the one with the strongest mix of proven form and upside.
The step up to 1m4f should suit. He is bred to stay, and there was enough in that debut effort to suggest he will improve for the extra distance rather than be stretched by it. He has already shown he can cope with the sort of race shape he is likely to face here, and that gives him a clear edge over rivals who are either exposed or still completely untested.
The biggest threat may be Ravenspire, who is an interesting newcomer for Karl Burke. He is well bred and could easily be useful, but debutants in slowly-run races can find things happening a bit quickly when the pace lifts. He has ability on paper, but he lacks the hard evidence that the selection already has.
Sinocentric is another newcomer with a good pedigree and plenty to recommend him on breeding, but this may not be the ideal scenario first time out. A stronger gallop might have suited him better.
Of the horses with experience, Starship Trooper makes the most appeal. He improved from his first run to his second, and this longer trip looks a plus. Even so, he may be vulnerable if this turns into a tactical sprint, because he looks more likely to be played late rather than be in the perfect position throughout.
Galistra was weak late on debut after being well backed, so she has a point to prove, while My Dad Frank looks one for further down the line.
There are no meaningful past race trends to help because there is no corresponding previous running to study, so the focus has to be on what is in front of us now: form, likely pace and who is best suited by the setup.
On all three counts, Into The Light comes out on top.
Verdict
Into The Light is the one to beat and should take plenty of stopping.
Ravenspire looks the main danger, with Starship Trooper the one to pick up the pieces if the newcomers are not quite tuned up.
