A small but competitive field of seven lines up for the Fakenham Silver Cup, and the early pace – or lack of it – looks set to play a major role in deciding the outcome.
Both the HRB race shape data and Timeform pace forecast point to a very steady early gallop, with no recognised front runner in the line-up. Around a tight track like Fakenham that often turns the race into a sprint from the home turn, making track position and tactical speed crucial.
Tapley the solid option
Tapley looks the most dependable option in the field. Suzy Smith’s nine-year-old won this race in 2024 and arrives in good nick after a productive spell over fences earlier in the season. He returns to hurdles here 2 lb lower than his chase mark, which immediately makes him interesting from a handicapping perspective.
His profile also fits the likely race shape. HRB data flags him as a strong late finisher, and crucially he usually races close enough to the pace to avoid giving away ground in steadily run races.
Course form at Fakenham counts for plenty and Tapley already has that box ticked.
Bluegrass a danger again
Last year’s winner Bluegrass cannot be ignored. Stuart Edmunds’ gelding has an excellent record at this track and three course-and-distance wins underline how well he handles the unique layout.
He hasn’t been the most consistent this season but first-time blinkers could sharpen him up. If the headgear has the desired effect and he sits handy in a slowly run race, he’s capable of going close again.
Nap Hand respected
Alan King’s Nap Hand fits the age profile of many recent winners and arrives match-fit after a decent run on the all-weather at Kempton. He’s a capable performer but the concern is tactical. If he ends up giving the leaders too much rope in a slowly run race, he could find himself with plenty to do.
The rest
Morning Mayhem won over course and distance recently and is still progressing, though his tendency to weaken late raises questions if this turns into a sharp sprint finish.
Cinammon Coco is interesting on ratings and receives a useful 7 lb claim from Rian Corcoran, but this is his handicap hurdle debut for the Pipe yard and he still has something to prove.
The remaining pair Inappropriate and Takeit Easy look to have plenty on their plate in this company.
Verdict
In a race where tactics are likely to dictate the outcome, Tapley looks the most reliable option. He has proven course form, arrives in good shape, and should be well positioned when the race begins in earnest.
With conditions likely to suit and the race setup in his favour, he makes the most appeal.
