5.45 Southwell – Down To The Kid the One to Beat🏇⤵️👇

·

This Class 3 seven-furlong handicap at Southwell looks a tactical affair with just six runners declared and very little confirmed pace in the field. When races here are run steadily, position becomes crucial and those able to sit handy before quickening tend to hold the advantage.
Down To The Kid thriving over C&D
Down To The Kid arrives in the best form of the field and looks the most solid option. Since dropping back to seven furlongs he has improved markedly, winning three of his last four starts over this exact course and distance.
His latest victory here three weeks ago came in a deeper twelve-runner race where he travelled strongly and finished his race off well. The handicapper has added just 2lb, which looks fair given how well he is currently running.
The key point is that he is a proven Southwell specialist, something that often proves decisive on this surface. With the expected steady tempo he should also be able to sit close to the pace and control his position.
Stablemate a clear danger
Trainer Michael Herrington also saddles Legal Reform, last year’s winner of this race and a remarkable five-time course-and-distance scorer. His recent Lingfield third was better than it looked as he finished strongest from the rear.
The concern is the likely pace scenario. In a race lacking early speed he could find himself with too much to do, especially giving weight away to the selection.
Others have something to prove
Eminency is capable on his day and wasn’t seen to best effect at Kempton last time, but he often races off the pace and may again struggle if the race turns tactical.
Diamondonthehill is admirably consistent but has developed a habit of finishing second or third and now hasn’t won for thirteen runs.
Sterling Knight returns from a lengthy absence, while King Of Ithaca looks up against it on ratings despite having previous course form.
Verdict
In a small field where track form and tactical position could prove decisive, Down To The Kid stands out. He is thriving at Southwell, clearly well suited by the seven-furlong trip and still looks fairly treated by the handicapper.
If reproducing his recent course form, he should take plenty of beating.
Selection: Down To The Kid
Confidence: Strong 💪🏇
