6.30 Southwell – Pace Could Decide This Class 6 Sprint🏇⤵️👇

·

Low-grade six-furlong handicaps at Southwell rarely lack pace and this one looks no different. The race shape points to strong early pressure, with Pinjarra and Alfa Sea Breeze likely to go forward and several others wanting prominent positions just behind. In these situations the leaders often soften each other up, leaving the race vulnerable to something finishing late.
Pinjarra Sets the Standard
Pinjarra arrives in winning form after scoring at Chelmsford three weeks ago and already has a course-and-distance win to his name. He’s a natural front runner and if allowed to dominate he could prove hard to peg back.
The issue is that scenario looks unlikely. With other pace influences in the field, he probably won’t get the uncontested lead he enjoyed last time, and off a 4lb higher mark life becomes tougher.
The Well-Handicapped Angle
The horse that stands out on handicapping grounds is Mount Ruapehu. He returned to form with a win at Newcastle in December and backed that up with a solid second at Dundalk. His most recent run over 5f looked too sharp, but he stayed on late suggesting a return to 6f is exactly what he wants.
Crucially, he’s the type who can sit just off the speed and finish strongly – a style that could be ideal if the expected pace battle materialises.
Danger From the Closers
Man On A Mission is another who could benefit if things collapse up front. He finished strongly when second at Kempton last time and that run suggested he’s still very capable from this mark.
He hasn’t won for a while, but he’s running well enough to think another victory isn’t far away.
Others With Something to Prove
Aspire To Glory returns from a lengthy break for a new yard and is respected on last year’s form, but fitness has to be taken on trust.
Bullington Bry and Amerjeet regularly run respectably without getting their heads in front, while Beelzebub looks more interesting when stepping back up to seven furlongs.
Verdict
This looks like a race where the pace could collapse, and that scenario points strongly towards Mount Ruapehu. Back at his optimum trip and still well treated on past form, he looks the one most likely to take advantage if the leaders go too hard early.
Selection: Mount Ruapehu
Bombproof rating: Medium ⚖️
