This is a competitive 6f handicap and the pace map immediately stands out. HRB shows no natural front runner and very little early pressure, suggesting this could turn into a steady, tactical sprint rather than a burn-up.
That’s important because races run this way often favour horses who can sit comfortably in midfield and quicken late, rather than those buried at the back hoping for a collapse.
DMANIAC – The One to Beat
Dmaniac looks the runner best suited to how this race is likely to unfold.
He signed off last season with a dominant C&D win on heavy ground, beating a big field with authority. The performance suggested there was more in the locker, and while a 9 lb rise asks a question, he remains relatively unexposed for a sprint handicapper.
His run style fits the race perfectly. He usually races mid-division, travels well and finishes strongly. In a race lacking genuine pace, that tactical positioning should allow him to sit within striking distance before delivering late.
At just four years old, he’s also one of the few runners in the field with clear improvement still possible.
The Main Threats
Unique Journey commands respect. He arrives chasing a C&D hat-trick after two soft-ground wins here in the autumn and clearly thrives in these conditions. The concern is the top weight of 10-0 combined with a five-month break. If fully tuned he will go very close, but he concedes weight to the whole field.
Stag Night is another who can’t be ignored. A C&D winner with a solid record fresh, he should be positioned close to the pace under Billy Lee. However, at eight years old he is a fully exposed sprinter, and improvement is unlikely.
Others
Staysound Susie won here in heavy ground last November and arrives in form, though many of her best efforts have come over 5f. This slightly longer trip in a tactical race may blunt her edge.
Love Billy Boy and Sarahmae are both capable late closers, but the projected slow early pace may not play to their strengths.
The remainder look up against it on current form.
Verdict
With the race likely to be run at a steady tempo, positioning and finishing speed will be crucial. Dmaniac ticks both boxes.
He has proven course and heavy-ground form, arrives on the back of a career-best performance and remains one of the few progressive horses in the field.
If returning in the same form as his last start, he should prove very hard to keep out of the frame and may well have enough in hand to follow up.
Selection: DMANIAC
Is the selection bombproof?
Medium
The profile and race setup are strong, but early-season fitness and the presence of Unique Journey mean this is solid rather than absolute certainty.
