This Class 3 mares’ handicap doesn’t look overly complicated on paper, but the race shape is likely to decide it.
Both the HRB pace map and Timeform point towards a weak early gallop. There is very little natural pace in the field and only Rula Bula looks a guaranteed forward goer, which raises the possibility of a tactical race where positioning matters far more than raw stamina.
In slowly run hurdles around Chepstow, prominent racers tend to hold the advantage, while hold-up horses can easily find themselves with too much to do turning for home.
That immediately puts the focus on Siog Geal.
She arrives here with arguably the best recent form in the race, having finished fifth of eighteen in a strong handicap at the Dublin Racing Festival. That was a deeper race than this and she was only beaten just over four lengths on heavy ground. Dropping back into a smaller Class 3 contest is a clear ease in grade.
Tactically she also looks well suited. Siog Geal generally races prominently without needing to lead, which should allow her rider to track the pace and strike at the right moment. In a race that may turn into a sprint from the second last, that kind of positioning is invaluable.
The 5 lb claim from Fern O’Brien is another small but useful edge, effectively easing the burden off a mark of 126.
The main danger looks to be Analiese, who is a progressive five-year-old and arrives in good form after two wins and a close second this winter. She is straightforward and should also be ridden handily, so she may get first run if the race becomes tactical.
Rula Bula is interesting from a pace perspective. If she is allowed an uncontested lead she could make things awkward for the rest, but she has not always been the strongest at the finish when pressure arrives late.
Tour Ovalie is another consistent performer and one of the better closers in the field, though the likely lack of pace may blunt her finishing kick.
As for Flying Fortune, she brings the highest peak form into the race, including a Grade 2 win over this course and distance in the past. However, she was well beaten on her reappearance at Warwick and has top weight to shoulder, so she needs to bounce back.
All things considered, the race setup looks straightforward. A steady gallop should favour those sitting close to the pace, and Siog Geal combines the strongest recent handicap form with the ideal tactical profile.
She does not need to improve to win this, merely reproduce the level she showed in better company earlier in the season.
Selection: Siog Geal
Bombproof rating: Medium 🔍
The profile is solid and the race shape should suit, but tactical races can be messy and Analiese or a softly-ridden Rula Bula could easily make things uncomfortable. 🏇
