A six–runner Class 5 handicap hurdle rarely produces anything complicated, and this looks a race where tactics will matter more than raw ability.
The HorseRaceBase pace map points to one likely front runner – Kalkaroo – with the rest either sitting prominently or being held up. Timeform also suggests the pace will be weak, which usually favours horses racing close to the speed.
In small-field hurdles at Market Rasen that can be decisive.
Kalkaroo – The Pace Angle
Billy Aprahamian’s Kalkaroo makes plenty of appeal on the tactical front. He won over this course and distance last month and followed that with a solid third at Plumpton. More importantly, he looks the only natural pace angle in the race.
If Gavin Sheehan is allowed to dictate, the favourite could control matters from the front and turn it into a sprint from the last.
His profile isn’t flawless – the C&D win came by a narrow margin and he can weaken late – but in a race lacking depth he holds a very obvious positional advantage.
Trust House – The Danger
Olly Murphy’s Trust House is the most interesting opponent. He shaped with encouragement when fifth at Warwick on his return from a long absence and that run should have blown away the cobwebs.
The problem is the likely race shape. Trust House tends to be ridden patiently and does his best work late. With only six runners and limited pace on paper, he may simply run out of road if Kalkaroo gets an uncontested lead.
He still looks the main threat if the tempo lifts more than expected.
Iamyouare – The Unknown
Donald McCain’s Iamyouare enters handicaps for the first time after three runs in maiden hurdles. His Bangor third suggests a workable mark and he retains a bit of upside compared to most of these.
That said, he lacks tactical certainty and in a race where positioning may decide things, that is a slight concern.
The Rest
Bunker Bay has bits of form that make him competitive from a low weight, but he still needs to prove he can deliver consistently over hurdles.
Raffles Nobu continues to run respectably without winning, while Little Soiree arrives badly out of form and looks hard to recommend.
Verdict
This is unlikely to be a strongly run race and that brings the tactical element to the fore. With no obvious pace rivals, Kalkaroo looks well placed to dictate from the front and could prove difficult to peg back around this sharp track.
Trust House may finish best of the rest, but the race shape may not play to his strengths.
Selection: Kalkaroo
Bombproof rating: Medium.
The favourite holds the key tactical advantage, but in a small-field handicap there is always the risk that a well-timed ride from a closer can turn the race late.
