2.30 Ffos Las – Plan A Conditional Jockeys Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (2m4½f, Soft)

·

A small but interesting six-runner mares’ handicap hurdle opens the card at Ffos Las on Monday. The contest is a Class 5 over an extended 2m4f on soft ground, conditions that usually place the emphasis firmly on stamina at this track.
Ffos Las is a galloping, left-handed circuit that becomes testing when the ground is soft, and races over this trip often turn into grinding finishes rather than tactical sprints. However, this particular race may develop slightly differently because there is no obvious front-runner in the field, suggesting the early pace could be steady.
That scenario introduces a tactical element. In small fields like this, the rider who judges the tempo best can gain a decisive advantage.
Queen Of Steel sets the standard
The most solid profile belongs to Queen Of Steel, trained by Fergal O’Brien. She arrives here in consistent form and, importantly, won this very race last year. Course form counts for plenty at Ffos Las and she clearly handles both the track and the likely testing ground.
Her recent form figures also suggest she remains in good heart. She has developed into a strong finishing type, which normally suits the long Ffos Las straight. The only minor concern is the likely steady pace, as a slowly run race could blunt her finishing kick slightly.
Even so, she remains the most reliable performer in the field.
Rest Is The Best could improve
The most interesting opponent could be Rest Is The Best, a lightly raced mare from the Harriet Dickin yard. Her recent efforts suggest she is still learning her job, but she has shaped as though further improvement is possible.
This step up in trip looks sensible and she has shown signs of staying on late in her races. If the pace lifts earlier than expected, she is one who could be finishing strongly.
Tactical angle with Man Maid
In a race lacking early pace, Man Maid may be the one who ends up close to the lead. Horses that can secure a handy position in slowly run races often gain an advantage, particularly in small fields.
However, her recent form leaves questions to answer and she needs to bounce back from a slightly underwhelming recent run.
Others face a tougher task
Hellfire Princess is the most experienced mare in the line-up and carries top weight off a mark of 100. While she has the ability to be competitive at this level, giving weight away in soft ground around Ffos Las is rarely easy.
The remaining pair, Half Pint Daisy and Neeps And Tatties, arrive with weaker recent form and will likely need improvement to trouble the principals.
Verdict
This race looks to revolve around Queen Of Steel, who ticks several important boxes. She has proven course form, solid recent performances and clearly handles the conditions.
The main threat may come from the improving Rest Is The Best, while Man Maid could become interesting if the race turns tactical and she secures an easy lead.
Overall, Queen Of Steel still looks the most dependable option in a race where experience of the track and conditions could prove decisive.
