A small-field mares’ bumper at Ffos Las where previous experience looks a clear advantage. With only six runners and no obvious front runner in the line-up, the race could develop into a steady tactical affair, placing the emphasis on positioning and a finishing effort rather than outright pace.
Ffos Las on soft ground can be a demanding track even over two miles, so runners that have already shown the ability to stay on strongly in the closing stages should be well suited.
Two mares stand out on the available form.
Port And Brandy made a solid start when finishing third on debut and holds the highest adjusted rating in the field. She shaped as though the experience would bring improvement and, with Sean Bowen taking the ride, she looks the one with the most solid credentials. In a race where many rivals are either unexposed or making their first start, her proven ability gives her a strong platform.
Diamond White brings the most consistent profile, having finished third on both of her starts. She has shown a tendency to finish her races well, suggesting the testing conditions at Ffos Las should suit. The Jonjo O’Neill yard does well in this type of race and another step forward would put her firmly in contention.
Among the newcomers, Mirabello is perhaps the most interesting. Trained by Jamie Snowden and by Order Of St George, she has a pedigree that suggests stamina and long-term jumping potential. Bumper runners from this yard can be ready to go first time, so any market strength would be notable.
Galatrona, from the Charlie Longsdon stable, is another debutante worth monitoring in the betting. Her Harzand pedigree points towards stamina, though without racecourse evidence she is harder to assess.
The remaining pair have something to prove. Atlantic Blue was well beaten on debut and will need significant improvement, while Johnnys Belle, a six-year-old making her first start, may be one for longer-term development rather than immediate impact.
Overall, this looks a race where experience and existing form should count for plenty. Port And Brandy sets the standard on ratings and could take a step forward from her debut, while Diamond White appears the most solid alternative if reproducing her previous efforts.
In a race lacking depth, those two may hold the key, with Mirabello the most intriguing newcomer should the market speak in her favour.
