A small but interesting five-runner handicap where the pace map could play a decisive role. Wolverhampton’s Tapeta over this trip tends to favour runners who secure position early, and with such a limited field tactical awareness will be crucial.
The pace picture looks straightforward. Gaelic Approach appears the only natural front runner and could be allowed to dictate from stall 1. In a race lacking obvious early pressure that scenario can be dangerous, particularly around this track where it is often difficult to make up ground if the leader steadies things mid-race.
The runner with the most appealing profile is Five Moons. The Simon Crisford filly has shaped with promise in three starts and now moves into handicap company off a mark of 70. Her pedigree suggests this step up to 1m4f should bring improvement – she is by Sea The Stars – and Jack Mitchell is a strong jockey booking around Wolverhampton. On adjusted ratings she already sets a solid standard and still has the look of a progressive type.
Magnetude sits near the top of the ratings and could easily play a major role if returning fit after a 116-day break. His previous runs suggest he finishes his races well, although in a slowly run contest that hold-up tendency may leave him with plenty to do late on. Market signals should be noted given the absence.
The possible tactical spoiler is Gaelic Approach. Charlie Johnston’s runners are often ridden positively and from stall 1 he could attempt to control the race from the outset. His form is not spectacular but in a race where the tempo may be modest he has the setup to outrun his rating.
Magician Of Riga is harder to assess. He has shown glimpses of ability but his usual hold-up style may be a disadvantage in this small field unless the pace lifts unexpectedly. He may need things to fall right.
Fuzeyya returns from a lengthy absence and has yet to show enough to suggest she is well treated off her current mark. Improvement is required.
Overall this looks a race where tactics and improvement potential outweigh raw form. Five Moons has the strongest progression angle and the pedigree to improve for the step up in trip, while Gaelic Approach could make things interesting if allowed to dominate from the front.
