This is a typical Irish maiden hurdle where the formbook only tells half the story. Large fields, unexposed runners and uncertain pace setups often turn these races into tactical contests. The key here looks to be race shape.
The Comment Shaper analysis suggests a strongly contested early pace, with Dubhain and Out Of Aces likely to push on early. That immediately raises the possibility of the leaders going too hard and setting the race up for something sitting just behind the speed.
The HRB ratings point clearly towards Combs, who tops the figures with a rating of 301, comfortably ahead of the rest of the field. Gordon Elliott’s four-year-old has been knocking on the door in similar races and his recent form figures show consistency without quite getting his head in front. Importantly, his usual prominent run style should allow him to sit just off the pace battle, which looks an ideal tactical position.
The main market rival is Powerful Paddy from the Willie Mullins yard. His overall rating of 286 puts him firmly in the mix and the Comment Shaper highlights him as a strong late finisher. If the pace collapses late on he will be one of the runners finishing best, though he has had opportunities already and may once again be playing for places.
Barley Lane is likely to be well supported after a solid recent run and his last-run figure is strong. However, his racing style may see him closer to the pace than ideal in a race that could develop into a stamina test late on.
One at a slightly bigger price who fits the predicted race scenario nicely is Ehteyat. He recorded the best last-run figure in the field and the data flags him as another strong closer. If the front runners overdo things he could easily pick off tired horses late.
Overall, the race shape combined with the HRB ratings brings the focus back to Combs. He has the strongest overall profile, a suitable run style for the expected pace scenario, and comes from a yard that knows how to place these types well.
