5.00 Wolverhampton – Restricted Novice Stakes (7f)🏇⤵️👇

·

This looks a straightforward race on paper but the pace setup could decide everything.
The HRB ratings are headed by Caballo Grande (301.9) and that advantage is backed up by the race shape analysis. He is the only identified front runner, which immediately gives him a tactical edge in a small five-runner field around Wolverhampton. If Hector Crouch is allowed to dictate steady fractions from stall 2, the race could quickly turn into a sprint off the bend, which is often very difficult for hold-up types to overcome at this track.
His debut figure of 74.7 on the last run column is comfortably the best recent piece of form in the field and the Comment Shaper flags that he often stays on strongly despite racing prominently. That is exactly the type you want when controlling a race from the front.
The obvious danger is Lahan Kingman from the Richard Hughes yard. Hughes won this race in 2024 and this filly has the pedigree and profile to improve. However, the race shape suggests she tends to sit mid division and finish late, which may not be ideal if Caballo Grande gets an uncontested lead.
Leonie looks the most likely improver for Andrew Balding and shaped as though 7f will suit, but again her running style suggests she will be coming from off the pace.
Glasgow Kiss has shown less so far and her profile indicates she can weaken late, which is a concern stepping into what may become a tactical race.
Florizelle makes her debut and looks up against it on the numbers.
In a race lacking early pace, the runner who controls the tempo often holds all the cards. Caballo Grande is the clear pace angle, holds the top HRB rating, and already has the strongest piece of form in the book.
If he gets an easy lead, they may struggle to peg him back.
Selection: Caballo Grande
