This is not a deep race and the numbers point very firmly in one direction.
On the HRB ratings, Cause For Comment dominates the field with a figure of 211, comfortably clear of Ballyphilip (205) and well ahead of the remainder. That gap matters in a small-field hunters’ chase where genuine quality is often thin.
His recent form of 5-2-2 suggests a horse running consistently well and knocking on the door. More importantly, the Comment Shaper flags him as a reliable strong finisher, regularly described as staying on or finishing well. In a race where the early pace is expected to be honest, that late strength becomes a significant asset.
The race shape model suggests one likely front runner – Hathaways Cottage. While an uncontested lead can sometimes prove dangerous in these races, the mare’s profile is not convincing. Her comments regularly show her weakening late, and her overall rating sits well below the principals. Even if she gets an easy time early, she still has to find more than the evidence suggests she possesses.
Ballyphilip rates second on the figures but returns from a 365-day absence, which is rarely ideal in this type of contest. If fully tuned up he has the ability to feature, but backing horses off a year off the track in hunters’ chases is rarely a comfortable position.
Benwisken is the possible improver after just one run, but he lacks the body of work to match the favourite’s established level.
The rest of the field look exposed and would need a sizeable step forward.
When the ratings leader also has the strongest finishing profile and arrives in form, the case becomes fairly straightforward.
Selection: Cause For Comment
He sets the clear standard on the HRB figures and looks the most likely horse to capitalise if the race is run at any sort of tempo.
Verdict: Strong
