This is a straightforward race to read but one that could easily be misjudged if you focus too heavily on finishing speed figures instead of how the race will actually unfold.
The key point is the lack of pace. There is no recognised front runner in the field and very little early pressure expected. That matters a great deal over 6f at Kempton, where track position is often decisive—especially in steadily run races. Horses ridden prominently or able to control the tempo tend to hold a significant advantage, while hold-up types can find themselves with too much to do.
That immediately puts the spotlight on Em Four, who looks the only runner capable of taking this race by the scruff of the neck. He is not a natural trailblazer, but in a race like this he may not need to be. If allowed an uncontested lead or able to sit handy and kick early, he becomes very dangerous.
Serenity Dream is the most solid and reliable horse in the race. He has the best recent profile, strong adjusted ratings, and proven course and distance form. The concern is tactical rather than ability—he is likely to be ridden patiently, and in a slowly run race that can leave him needing gaps at the wrong time. Even so, he sets the standard.
Amazonian Dream, drawn in stall 1, is another who makes plenty of appeal on paper. The inside draw is a major asset in this type of race, but like others he tends to be ridden off the pace. If he can sit closer than usual, he has a serious chance; if not, he risks being caught in traffic.
The likes of Invincible Speed, Al Barez, and Brazen Idol are all strong finishers, but the race shape is against them. Without a proper pace to aim at, they are reliant on things falling perfectly, which is never ideal in a tight Kempton sprint.
So this looks like a race where tactics outweigh raw ability.
Verdict – Who wins?
Em Four is the one most likely to get the run of the race and can make it count from the front or just off it.
Main danger: Serenity Dream
Best of the closers: Amazonian Dream (if ridden handier)
In short: in a race lacking pace, side with the horse most likely to control it.
