8.30 Kempton – Straight Call🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a modest Class 5 over 1m3f, but the shape of the race matters more than the raw ratings.
There is no obvious front-runner. The data backs that up and the historical run styles confirm it. This is likely to turn into a steadily run race where positioning is everything. At Kempton over this trip, especially on standard to slow, that usually means one thing: those near the pace get first run, and the closers struggle to land a blow.
That immediately puts a question mark over several of the obvious contenders.
Kings Hand is the form horse and still improving, but he’s typically ridden with patience. In a race lacking pace, that’s a genuine concern. He may well be the best horse in the field, but he’s vulnerable to how the race is run.
Muy Muy Loco and Solanna fall into a similar category. Both are strong finishers, both likely to be played late, and both need a pace collapse that simply doesn’t look likely. They are dependent on others setting it up for them.
So the focus shifts to those who can hold position and strike first.
That brings in Tortured Soul.
He’s drawn in stall 1, is a course and distance winner, and crucially has the tactical profile to sit handy in a race where very few will want to lead. He doesn’t need things to fall perfectly; he just needs a clean position and a fair tempo, which he’s far more likely to get than the closers.
Seventy is interesting as a progressive type, but he’s not the most reliable at the start and that’s a big negative in this kind of race. If you miss the kick here, you’re on the back foot immediately.
The rest look either exposed or lacking the tactical edge required.
Verdict
This is a race where tactics trump talent.
If they go no gallop – and all signs suggest they won’t – then the advantage lies with the horse who can sit close, travel smoothly, and kick first.
That horse is Tortured Soul.
He’s not flashy, but he’s solid, well drawn, proven at the track, and set up perfectly for how this race is likely to unfold.
Winner: Tortured Soul
