This is a low-grade staying handicap chase where you don’t need to overcomplicate things, but you do need to get the race shape right.
There’s a weak front runner in Atlanta Brave, and enough pressure behind from the likes of Johnny Boy and Daring Plan to ensure this is run at a proper gallop. Over 3m1f on good to soft, that matters. These races often turn into a test of who actually stays and who finds off the bridle late.
That immediately puts the focus on proven stayers and strong finishers, not flashy profiles or unreliable types.
Johnny Boy is the most solid option in the field. He’s consistent, still progressing, and comes from a yard that knows exactly how to place these types. He’ll be ridden handily, won’t get caught out tactically, and crucially, he keeps finding off the bridle. In a race full of horses that don’t always do that, it’s a big edge.
The main danger is The Magus, who is likely to be played late. He’s one of the few in the race with a genuine finishing effort and this setup could easily fall his way if they go too hard early. The risk is obvious — hold-up ride, needs gaps, and things to drop right.
Daring Plan will give you a run for your money but looks vulnerable late, while Prince Cleni is more of a grinder who could pick up pieces without necessarily winning. The rest either don’t stay strongly enough or arrive with too many questions.
So it comes down to a simple call:
Do you trust the solid, progressive, tactically sound runner?
Or do you side with the closer who needs things to fall right?
In this grade, reliability usually wins.
Verdict: JOHNNY BOY
He’s the one most likely to run his race, handle conditions, and see it out properly. In a weak contest, that’s often all you need.
The Magus is the one who could make it interesting late, but he’s playing catch-up.
Winner: Johnny Boy
