Huntingdon 2.45 – Straightforward on paper, tactical in reality🏇⤵️👇

·

This is a small-field novice handicap chase that looks simple at first glance, but the pace angle gives it a bit more depth than a four-runner race usually offers.
Two habitual front runners – Ballynaheer and Dangerous Touch – are likely to take each other on. In a bigger field that might not matter, but in a race like this, over nearly three miles at Huntingdon, it can turn into a test of efficiency rather than raw stamina. If they go too hard, they risk handing the race to something sitting just behind.
That said, the race still revolves around Ballynaheer.
He comes here on a clear upward curve, has been finishing his races strongly, and looks well suited by both the track and trip. He’s shown he can sustain a gallop and still find late on, which is often what separates these improving staying chasers from exposed handicappers. Even if pressured early, he doesn’t look the type to fold easily.
Dangerous Touch is the obvious danger. He’s solid, consistent, and the application of first-time blinkers could sharpen him up. Sean Bowen is a notable booking given his record in races like this, and if the headgear has the desired effect, he could easily make this a proper test. The concern is that he may end up forcing the issue and setting it up for something else.
That “something else” is Datsalrightcharlie, who is the only runner likely to get the race run to suit. He can sit just off the speed and pick up the pieces if the front pair overdo it. He’s unexposed and open to improvement, but he does need to prove he’s up to this level over fences.
Mahler Moon is the closer, but in a four-runner race he’s hostage to tactics. He’ll be staying on, but he may simply run out of track unless things collapse in front of him.
Verdict
Strip it back and this is about profile and reliability.
Ballynaheer is the only runner arriving here with clear progression, solid recent form, and proven suitability for the test. Even allowing for a potentially contested lead, he sets the standard.
Winner: Ballynaheer
If anything is to beat him, it’s Dangerous Touch forcing the issue and finding improvement in blinkers—but more likely, he helps ensure the favourite gets the race run to suit.
