This looks set to be run at a crawl. There is only one confirmed front runner in the field – The Brickey Ranger – and nothing obvious to take him on. Around Hereford over 2 miles on good to soft, that matters. A soft, uncontested lead in a race like this can be very hard to peg back, especially when most of the opposition are hold-up or midfield types who rely on a stronger gallop.
Just Aidan is the standout on recent form and the ratings back that up. He’s progressive, comes here off a win, and is one of the few in the field who finishes his races strongly. The issue is obvious though – he is very likely to be dropped in again, and in a steadily run race he could simply have too much ground to make up.
Formel Park is the interesting one. She’s still relatively unexposed over fences, already has a win in this sphere, and crucially looks tactically more adaptable than most of these. In a race lacking pace, that ability to sit handier could be the difference.
No Guarantee will run his race but looks one-paced, while Forsa Bay and others have shown a tendency to weaken late. Lempire Vert and the rest need to bounce back or improve significantly.
The key to the race is simple: if The Brickey Ranger gets an easy lead and jumps cleanly, he will take catching. But relying on a limited front runner to hold on is always risky.
Verdict: FORMEL PARK is the percentage call. She brings the right mix of progression, position and race setup to take this. Just Aidan is the best horse, but the race may not be run to suit. The Brickey Ranger is the danger if gifted the race from the front.
The 4.00 at Hereford is a low-grade novice handicap chase on paper, but tactically it’s far more interesting than the class suggests.🏇⤵️👇
