than just the raw ratings.
There is no obvious front-runner. In fact, there is barely any early pace at all. That matters. In races like this at Newcastle over 1m2f, a slow early gallop often turns the contest into a sprint from the home turn. When that happens, positioning becomes far more important than finishing effort.
A large proportion of this field are hold-up performers. Dingwall, Star Cast, Hashtagnotions and Golspie all tend to be ridden patiently, and while they are capable of finishing strongly, they are vulnerable in a race where the tempo is steady and track position is hard to recover. You simply cannot afford to be giving lengths away turning for home in this type of contest.
The draw adds another layer. Newcastle is generally fair, but in steadily run races over this trip, those drawn low to middle have an easier time securing a position. Those drawn wider risk being shuffled back or forced to cover extra ground.
Putting all of that together, the race tilts towards horses who can sit handy, travel comfortably and quicken off a steady pace.
Star Cast makes plenty of appeal on those grounds. She is drawn in stall 1, arrives here off a recent win, and has already shown she handles the track. She doesn’t need to be held up and, in a race lacking pace, that tactical flexibility is a major asset. In a contest where many will be played late, she has the profile of one who can get first run.
Daring Leader is another who fits the race well. He is progressive and comes here on the back of a win, and his draw in stall 4 should allow him to adopt a prominent position. The only concern is the absence, but if fit, he has the right profile for how this race is likely to unfold.
Dingwall is solid and consistent, but this setup is not ideal. A wide draw combined with a hold-up style leaves him needing luck. He will be staying on late, as usual, but may simply run out of track.
Prince Achille is more interesting than his recent form suggests. He has won this race before and is well drawn in stall 2. Back at a track that suits, and in a race that may favour those ridden a little closer, he is capable of bouncing back at a price.
Mao Shang Wong is unexposed and now finds himself on a reduced mark, but like several others, he is likely to be ridden patiently. In a race lacking pace, that is not ideal, and he may need things to fall perfectly.
The rest look up against it. Hashtagnotions and Golspie will be doing their best work late, but both are hostage to how the race develops, while the likes of Toronto Raptor and Wath Court would need a complete turnaround.
In summary, this is not a race to overcomplicate. The key is the pace — or lack of it. In a steadily run contest, favour those who can sit handy and strike first.
Star Cast looks the most solid option given her draw, recent form and tactical versatility, while Daring Leader rates the main danger if fully fit. Prince Achille is the one to keep onside at a bigger price, particularly for each-way purposes, given his course record and favourable draw.
The 5.25 at Newcastle looks a typical Class 6 on paper, but the shape of this race gives it a very clear angle if you’re prepared to focus on how it will be run rather🏇⤵️👇
